Download one of the following distributions:

For Try-out and Installation For Long-term Try-out
(Persistence)
Linux Mint Debian Edition (1.4 GBytes, .ISO file) Linux Mint 16 Petra (1.3 GBytes, .ISO file)
For really old computers
LMDE 32-bit (1.4 GBytes, .ISO file) Petra 32-bit (1.3 GBytes, .ISO file)

You may need to right-click and select "Save Link"


Create your bootable USB drive
  1. Download Universal USB Installer (UUI) (1.1 MBytes, .EXE file)
  2. Run the UUI program (doesn't need installation)
  3. Acknowledge the GNU General Public License
  4. Use these settings:
    Universal USB Installer screenshot
    • Select a Linux Distribution: Linux Mint
    • Browse to: linuxmint-201403-mate-dvd-64bit.iso
    • Select your USB Flash Drive: Pick a letter
    • We will format: Checkmark this box
    • Set a Persistent file: As large as possible
    • Click Create
  5. UUI asks for confirmation:

    • Click Yes
  6. UUI shows the progress of the installation:

  7. You may see this window while UUI extracts documents

    Don't click anything!
  8. Installation is complete!

    • Click Close

Alternative to UUI: UNetbootin v5.8.5 (5 MBytes, .EXE file), the Universal Netboot Installer


Set your BIOS to boot from the USB drive
  1. Turn your computer off and on again.
  2. Press the key to enter the BIOS. ESC, F1 or DEL are typical.
  3. Set the boot sequence to boot a USB drive before the hard drive. Different BIOSes do this in different ways.
  4. Save BIOS changes, reboot with the Linux USB drive inserted.
