Initial Installation Instructions for APC PowerChute Personal
Edition v1.5:

Please note the following before you install the software:

  - If a battery backup is not connected, the installation will
    not proceed.

  - In addition, you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or
    higher installed.

  - For Windows 98 (including 98 Second Edition) ONLY: Please
ensure that you have the HID drivers installed on your system.
These are available from the installation disk of Windows 98,
not on this CD. Connect up your battery backup to the PC
via the USB cable and follow the Plug-n-Play instructions
provided by the operating system. When this is finished,
proceed to install APC PowerChute Personal Edition.

  - If you have a version of Power Management Extensions on your
computer, you should uninstall before proceeding with the
installation. Otherwise, APC PowerChute Personal Edition
installer will stop at this point.

  1. Run the program "Setup.exe" to start the installation
     process.

  2. If you have a previous version of PowerChute Personal Edition
installed, running the install program will upgrade
to v1.5 of the software. Press 'Yes' to accept the upgrade
     and proceed to step 5.

  3. The Installer proceeds to the software license agreement
dialog. Read the text and choose the Yes button if you accept
     the agreement.

  4. On the following dialog, you can specify an install directory
     or accept the default:
     C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition.

Choose Browse to change the default and specify a directory
in the displayed dialog box. Choose Next to proceed.

  5. The message "Copying program files....", is displayed until
setup finishes the installation or upgrade. Click the Finish
     button.

  6. On Windows 2000 and XP systems the PowerChute Personal
Edition installer enables hibernation by default on your system
if it can. This is done because, during an extended power
problem, hibernation saves the complete contents of your
computer's memory (including all open files) to disk. When AC
utility power is restored, you simply turn on your computer
and you can continue exactly where you left off.

APC recommends using hibernation. If PowerChute Personal
Edition cannot enable this feature, it will shutdown your
system instead during an extended power outage. Check out
Windows help for more information on hibernation.

  7. Full online help is available from the product at any time by
running PowerChute and clicking on the information icon at
the bottom right hand side of the application, or press F1 at
any time to receive context-sensitive help.
