Paul’s Last Party . . . Forever Young

Celebrating our dear friend, Paul C. Young

Date: Sunday, 6 August 2017 (More by coincidence than design, woulda been a Jakefest date!)
Time: from 2:00pm until whenever
Place: The Moonshine Café (905-844-2655)
Location: 137 Kerr Street in Oakville Map
The Moonshine was a special place for Paul; its owners John Marlatt and Jane MacKay, have been ceaseless supporters of and providers for roots / folk / acoustic-based music. As with so many of us, their inspiration stems from their introduction to it at the White Oak Folk Club, operated by Paul, then held at the Oakville Centre. They still have (framed) their 50-50 draw ticket from their first night there!

What we’ve decided is to hold the event as a drop-in occasion, starting at 2 o’clock and carrying on into the evening, until everyone who wishes to do so has had an opportunity to pay respects, give us a song or tell ‘Paul stories’.

Paul’s wishes were No sad songs, only happy memories and happy music.

No sad songs??? We’ll do our best, but c’mon Paul; we’re folkies!

So, here be more details:

  • no admission, though there will be donation jars set up for both the Kidney Foundation and for the Oakville and Milton Humane Society
  • potluck food contributions very welcome (finger foods, not hot items)
  • cash bar
  • open mic — likely the basic folk club setup, depending on how many people wish to partake (i.e. how crowded we might be at any one time); figure on 2 songs and maybe a few words. There will be 2 house guitars available and a sound system. No drum kit set up, but hand percussion (bongos, congas, djembes, cahons & such) most welcome.

The day may well be recorded for a souvenir CD, courtesy of Urmas Soomet of Studio 13 Live Sound Recording.

Hoping many of you will be able to join us and visit this cozy venue that Paul loved so much.

Guitar
Glen Reid 24 1/2” Dreadnaught guitar

Also: Paul’s guitar is for sale. This is a custom-built prototype built especially for Paul by Glen Reid and has a value of $2000. It also has had a Fishman pickup system added to it. Comes with a hard case, leather strap, capo and Snark tuner. I believe the following details are accurate:

  • Full Size Dreadnaught Guitar
  • 24 1/2” scale
  • Ebony Pin Bridge
  • Ebony fingerboard
  • Black Cherry back/neck/sides
  • Sitka Spruce top

Any offer over $1200 will be considered. If not sold in the meantime, it will be on display at the party. It would be a fine thing if it was sold to someone Paul knew.

Any inquiries, please call Jeremiah at +1-519-732-5677 or email jeremiahmccawbudnark@gmail.com

And: Paul’s keyboard is also available. This is a full-size (88-key) Roland ep–9 Digital Piano, definitely a professional grade instrument. (Technical Specifications)

Original retail price was around or above $1000. It’s no longer being sold; it would be nice to have an offer around $300.

Oh, and one more thing (will it never end?)

Paul had two cats as well. Timothy and Pootsi are brother and sister, about 8 years old. We’re going to bring them into our household, but there’s already a cat in residence and we can’t say for certain that it will work out. Should this fail, would anyone be willing to take them? We don’t want to split them up. They’re fixed and spayed and are both very sweet and affectionate (Timmy’s beside me being a big purr machine as I write this.)
