Meeting Mon, 16 Apr 2018 at First United Church, 16 William St., Waterloo about Dark Web, Hidden Services

Mail Archive

Hi everyone: The weather outside is frightful, but a meeting about Dark Webs and Hidden Services will be delightful!

We are having our meeting tonight, even though there is still snow and ice on the ground. The parking lot at First United Church has been plowed, but there is still snow and ice around the property, so be careful coming in. Come in at the back door off Caroline Street; we're on the top-most floor; just follow the KWNPSA signs. Sorry, this venue is not accessible, there are stairs to climb.

Tonight I'm going to do a very brief demonstration of Tor, The Onion Router, and I2P, the Invisible Internet Project. Depending on the technical level of the audience I may start with an overview of Tor aimed at end-users. All this should take about an hour.

Don't expect to get a glimpse of the seedy underbelly of the Internet -- tonight's demonstration is intended for NonProfit System Administrators who need to protect their organizations and their end-users from the dangers of surveillance. We're not buying or selling merchandise on Silk Road or launching Low Orbit Ion Cannon attacks.

The most important part of KWNPSA meetings is always the round-table discussion, which will take up the second hour. We can discuss the difficulty of supporting strange infrastructure like Hidden Services, and the danger we put our end-users in when the configuration of "secure" services goes wrong.

See you tonight!
